Mercy College Faculty Participate in STEM in the Park
On September 23, Nick Schmall, Scott Hevner, and Justin Ways participated in STEM in the Park. This event, held at Perry Field House on the Bowling Green State University (BGSU) campus, provided the community with hands-on activities based in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The event organizers reported 179 activities spread across 1,105 exhibitors from various institutions of higher education, K-12 education, local businesses, and community non-profit agencies, and over 6,000 participants from the community interested in STEM activities (Source: 2017 STEM in the Park Report).
This year Mercy College's activity was titled “The Physics of Healthcare” and involved practical demonstrations of electricity and magnetism. Included in these demonstrations were how electromagnets worked and the physics and applications of a Van de Graaff generator. Quentin Moore provided a video of various MRI and CT scans that was continuously looped to show the practical uses of electricity and high-power magnets and how the concepts are related. It was important to be sure the activity was tied to Mercy College's healthcare focus.
