Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) Information

Students beginning their education at Mercy College are required to attend an arientation prior to the start of classes. Please carefully read the full page of information below . Mercy College offers a variety of orientation experiences depending on if you are a land-based at the Toledo campus, attending the Youngstown campus, or enrolled as an online program student. 
 
  • Toledo campus land-based students are required to attend a Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) session. Dates for SOAR are below. 
  • Youngstown location students are required to attend an orientation in Youngstown. Learn more and sign up for orientation: 
  • Online program students will be sent information regarding online orientation.

Please note the steps below. If you are unable to complete these requirements, please contact us immediately.

1.  Review your acceptance letter to see if the ACCUPLACER Assessment is required of you. If so, please contact the Mercy College Testing Center directly to schedule your assessment at 419-251-1734. ACCUPLACER Testing must be completed at least 48 hours before your appointment with your academic advisor.

2.  Submit the $125 Enrollment Deposit and Enrollment Deposit form (included in your admission packet). This enrollment deposit serves as your acceptance for admission at Mercy College.

3.  Schedule an appointment with an advisor by contacting the Academic Resource Center at 419-251-8955.

4. Bring the following items with you the day of SOAR:

  • Materials from your advising appointment, such as your program of study worksheet and the list of courses you were advised to take for the upcoming semester.
  • A valid government issued photo ID
  • Your vehicle information including the year, make, and model of your car, and license plate number (so we can process your parking pass).
Toledo campus land-based students must meet with an academic advisor PRIOR to attending SOAR.  Schedule an appointment with an advisor by contacting the Academic Resource Center at 419-251-8955. Information detailed in your advising session will be used for course registration during SOAR. 
 
Youngstown location students meet with academic advisors at Youngstown Orientation
 
Online program students will receive information in the mail about how to contact your academic advisor to schedule an appointment. In addition, your Program Director will send you important information including a Plan of Study or Program Worksheet to indicate which courses you will want to register for upon receiving your Empower log-in information. To schedule an appointment with an advisor please call 419-251-8955.

  • SOAR typically lasts 4 to 6 hours, please plan the remainder of your day accordingly.
  • Students beginning clinicals will receive an additional mailing from their department regarding program orientation, uniforms, health records and additional assessments.
  • Students currently enrolled in classes at another college are reminded to have official transcripts sent directly to Mercy College when final grades are posted.

Parking Map and Directions to Mercy College

Online Orientation: Online program students are highly encouraged to participate in Online Orientation. The Online Orientation link will be sent to your Mercy College email address 4 weeks prior to your courses beginning. It is recommended you complete the Orientation prior to the first day of classes. It will include information about important dates and deadlines, how to pay your bill, how to drop courses, how to add or make changes to your course schedule, an introduction to technology services including Canvas the Learning Management System where your courses are housed, review of College policies and procedures, and review of academic and behavioral expectations and student services available to help you succeed. If you do not receive the Online Orientation email by December 6, please contact amy.mergen@mercycollege.edu.
Are my parents allowed to come to SOAR?
Parents who have graduating high school seniors are welcome to attend SOAR.
 
Do I start the Financial Aid process before SOAR?
Students should start the financial aid process as soon as taxes are completed. The FASFA should be completed at least two weeks before coming to SOAR. This will allow the financial aid office to assist you with final steps of the process.
 
What are we going to do at SOAR?
At SOAR, you can mingle with current students, faculty, and staff. You will be introduced to financial aid, registration, housing, Mercy College policy and procedures and get answers to your questions. You will also register for your classes at SOAR.
 
Do transfer students need to attend SOAR?
Yes – all students must complete SOAR before beginning classes at Mercy College.
 
Does the Accuplacer Assessment and academic advising need to be completed before SOAR?
Accuplacer testing and academic advising must be completed at least 48 hours before SOAR. Your initial acceptance letter will describe the Accuplacer testing procedure only if it is required of you. You will not be able to register for classes if Accuplacer testing is required and you fail to do so prior to SOAR.
 
When do I get my college schedule?
Students will leave SOAR with a semester schedule and will be ready to start classes.
 
Who will help me with my college schedule?
Your academic advisor will help you with your schedule during advising. Please see SOAR Information and Reminders (above) for information regarding scheduling academic advising.
