Admission Requirements

The nursing program curriculum is evaluated and modified on an on-going basis to meet the changing needs of the healthcare industry. Requirements for admission, progression and graduation are likewise evaluated and modified. Students and applicants will be notified of changes. Since there are frequently more applicants than available space, admission to the nursing program is competitive. Admission is granted to the best-qualified students. A new group of students is admitted each fall.

Admission to the program does not guarantee immediate placement in the nursing courses. Students are responsible for knowing the prerequisites for courses prior to registration.

The Nursing Admission, Progression and Graduation committee will act on the application when all required admission materials are received.

In addition to the universal admission requirements for Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, applicants to the nursing program must have:

  1. A high school grade point average of 2.7 or better, or minimum GED composite score of 57 or a minimum of 15 college quarter/semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum grade point average of 2.7, whichever is most recent.

  2. High school algebra with minimum grade of 'C' or college equivalent with minimum grade of 'C' completed within the past seven years.

  3. High school biology with lab with minimum grade of 'C' or college equivalent with minimum grade of 'C' completed within the past seven years.

  4. High school chemistry course with lab with minimum grade of 'C' or college equivalent with minimum grade of 'C' completed within the past seven years.

  5. High school courses, or their equivalent, in English, 3 units, of which may include public speaking or journalism and not required for GED, in social studies -- 2 units and not required for GED, and in math 2 units, of which one must be algebra.

  6. ACT composite score of 20, or equivalent SAT score with a score of 20 on the sub-tests in both mathematics and 19 on sub-tests in scientific reasoning. Testing will be waived for transfer students who have earned a minimum of 15 college quarter/semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum grade point average of 2.7.

  7. Placement assessment: Applicants must address any deficiencies identified on assessment.

Post-Acceptance Procedures Prior to Attending Associate Degree of Science/Nursing Classes

  1. Health: Good physical and mental health is required as determined by a physician. Applicants must maintain a level of health consistent with enabling them to carry out successfully the demands of the program before final acceptance to the nursing program is granted. The following health information is required prior to final acceptance.
    • Completion of health history form by applicant.
    • Completion of health physical form by a physician.
    • Completion of all required titers and immunizations.

  2. CPR Certification: Nursing students are required to complete an American Heart Association course for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification prior to taking nursing courses. It is the student's responsibility to maintain certification throughout the program.
  3. Placement Assessment: Applicants must address any deficiencies identified on assessment.

Nursing Program

The Associate Degree Program in Nursing at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, NY; 10006; 212-363-5555, Ext. 153; www.nlnac.org.


Registered Nursing Licensure Requirements Prospective nursing students are advised that when applying for state licensure examination, they will be required to indicate whether or not they have ever been convicted of a felony or other crimes. A positive response to this question may disqualify the candidate for licensure. The Ohio Board of Nursing (or the licensing board of Nursing in whichever state a student applies for examination) makes all eligibility decisions. Ohio Licensure Examination Applicants: Effective June 1, 2003 for all students entering a pre-licensure nursing program after June 1, 2003, candidates who wish to sit for the NCLEX RN or PN examination will be required to submit their fingerprints to the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII).
