The following is a list of the current scholarships available to our students. Since this list is subject to change, you are encouraged to work with the Financial Aid Office for assistance with the application process. The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 28.

 


Mercy College Scholarships
Scholarships Available

Sr. Phyllis Ann Gerold Scholarship
The Sister Phyllis Ann Gerold, R.S.M., Scholarship was established by the Board of Trustees of Mercy and St. Charles Hospitals in recognition and honor of her dedicated leadership and outstanding accomplishments. Awarding financial scholarships to deserving students of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio continues her legacy of excellence.

This scholarship is available to a student(s) in the Associate of Science or Bachelors of Science in Nursing programs, in financial need, and who has completed (is completing) the first level of nursing courses and is eligible to begin the second level of the nursing program at Mercy College. The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient.

To apply, complete the scholarship application form. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, books and/or fees only.

The Kelley-Robarge Scholarship
The Kelley-Robarge Scholarship was established in memory of Becky Kelley-Robarge, Dean of Academic Affairs at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio (Mercy College) from 1992 to 2000. A believer in life-long learning, Mrs. Kelley-Robarge began her career as a Candy Striper volunteer, graduated in 1973 from the Mercy School of Nursing and was a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital. She started her teaching career as a Nursing Instructor at the Mercy School of Nursing and was instrumental in the School evolving into Mercy College. Becky was most proud of her efforts in assisting with the College's successful pursuit of its North Central Association accreditation and in the planning of the Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree program.

The award is to be made to a student(s) seeking a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0, who is in financial need, has completed all pre-licensure requirements and is entering the first level of nursing courses leading to the degree at Mercy College. The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient.

To apply, complete the scholarship application form and submit a short essay explaining your choice of nursing as a career, particularly the BSN degree. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, books and/or fees only.

Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Presidential Scholarship
The Presidential Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis. There is one scholarship for one full year's tuition (approximately $7,000/year), and two scholarships for one full year's half-tuition (approximately $3,500/year).

Prospective students with a minimum 3.5 high school grade point average and a minimum ACT composite score of 25 may apply for the Presidential Scholarship. The College's scholarship committee selects the recipients. The scholarship is renewable annually, as long as a minimum grade point average of 3.3 is maintained.

Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Dean's Scholarship
The Dean's Scholarship is awarded on a yearly basis. This award is for $1,750.00 per semester.

Prospective students with a minimum 3.3 high school grade point average and a minimum ACT score of 21 may apply for the Dean's Scholarship. The College's scholarship committee selects the recipient. The scholarship is renewable annually as long as a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is maintained.

Mercy Alumni Association Student Scholarship
Each year the Mercy Alumni Association awards a $500 scholarship to three students currently enrolled at Mercy College. The scholarship will be awarded based on a review of student applications that meet the following criteria.

The student must:

  • Have successfully completed all first level courses and be eligible to begin the second level of the program of study.
  • Currently have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Demonstrate evidence of clinical competence (applicants must submit letters of recommendation by two previous clinical instructors)

  • The College's scholarship committee selects the recipients.

    Mary Beth Hayward Scholarship
    The Mary Beth Hayward scholarship is named for a former member of the faculty of Mercy School of Nursing from 1966 to 1974, who later served as an Associate Professor and Director of the RN-to-BSN Program at the Medical College of Ohio until her death in 2004. Mrs. Hayward served the Nursing profession as President of the Ohio League for Nursing and President of the Northwest Ohio Nurses Association. She also volunteered her service to the community as President and Board member of the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio, Board member of Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Sunset Retirement Community.

    Mercy College students admitted to or enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion and Pre-licensure degree programs with at least a 3.0 grade point average may apply. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to Mercy values and also have the greatest financial need. The College's scholarship committee selects the recipient.

    Sr. Patricia Ann Dalke Scholarship
    Sr. Patricia Ann Dalke was the first, and founding President,of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. It is because of her leadership and vision that the college was established in December of 1992. Prior to assuming the Presidency at the college in 1993, she was the Director of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, and the Associate Director of Nursing Services at Mercy Hospital of Toledo. Sr. Patricia Ann Dalke has also served faithfully as a Sister of Mercy for over fifty years. An endowed scholarship, from the generosity of the Mercy College Auxiliary and other donors, has been established in honor of Sr. Patricia Ann Dalke.

    Mercy College students admitted to, or enrolled in a bachelors degree program with at least a 3.0 grade point average may apply. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to Mercy values and also have the greatest financial need. The College's scholarship committee selects the recipient.

    Bishop James Hoffman Parish Scholarship
    A scholarship is available through each pastor in the Diocese of Toledo and will be awarded to a deserving member of his parish. Each candidate should evoke the Bishop's leadership values and be prepared to give witness to their faith by serving others through a career in healthcare. The recipient must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, have demonstrated Christian leadership in the parish or civic community, express a willingness to actively participate in the College's campus ministry/service learning program, be a new admission to the College, and be enrolled full-time.
    Susanne M. Prusakiewicz Smith & Michael C. Smith Memorial Scholarship
    A Scholarship is available annually for Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Medical Laboratory Technology students. This scholarship was established in the memory of Susanne M. Prusakiewicz Smith and Michael C. Smith to further medical laboratory excellence. Susanne was a medical laboratory technologist at St. Vincent Medical Center from 1960-1992, and Michael was her son. This scholarship is made possible by the generosity of Willis Smith, Susanne's husband and Michael's father. Willis was the supervisor of the clinical chemistry department at St. Vincent's and is a noted photographer.

    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio students admitted to the medical laboratory technology program may apply for this scholarship. The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient. Highest consideration will be given to students who demonstrate academic excellence and have the greatest financial need.

    Mercy College Auxiliary Scholarship
    The Mercy College Auxiliary has established two endowed scholarships for students at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio to recognize academic excellence, help students in financial need, and perpetuate the Mercy values of excellence, justice, human dignity, mercy, and service. The Auxiliary has served the Mercy-Toledo area by providing volunteers, community support, and funding. The Mercy College Auxiliary has focused its efforts on supporting the mission of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio since 1996.

    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio students with a minimum a 3.0 grade point average may apply for the Mercy College Auxiliary Scholarship. The college's scholarship committee selects the recipients. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to Mercy values, and the greatest financial need.

    To apply, complete the scholarship application form. The scholarship can be used only for educational purposes. It will be presented at the fall Student Recognition Assembly.

    Regueyra Family Memorial Scholarship
    The Alberto Regueyra scholarship for nursing students at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio was established in the memory of Alberto Regueyra, the brother of Dr. F.I. Regueyra, to recognize nursing excellence and to help students in financial need.

    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio nursing students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average may apply for the scholarship.

    The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to the college's motto of compassion and caring and have the greatest financial need.

    To apply, complete the scholarship application form and submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who has worked with you in the clinical setting. The letter should address your nursing abilities and your commitment to caring for patients with compassion. The scholarship can be used only for educational purposes. It will be presented at the fall Student Recognition Assembly.

    Ashel and Dorothy Bryan Scholarship
    In 1998, Mr. And Mrs. Ashel Bryan created an endowed scholarship fund for students at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio to recognize academic excellence and to help students in financial need. Dorothy Bryan, an artist cited for her work with cancer survivors, created the Chemo Paintings during her struggle with cancer. Dorothy, now deceased, had shared her talents and insights with Mercy College students and was the recipient of the College's 1997 Misericordia Et Cura Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Mercy College Board of Trustees. Ashel Bryan, one of the founders of Mid American National Bank & Trust Company, plays a major role in philanthropic efforts in the fields of health care and education in Northwest Ohio.

    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average may apply for the scholarship. The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to the college's motto of compassion and caring and have the greatest financial need.

    To apply, complete the scholarship application form. The scholarship can be used only for educational purposes. It will be presented at the fall Student Recognition Assembly.

    John R. Opial Mercy College Scholarship
    The Opial family of Rossford, Ohio established a scholarship in the memory of John R. Opial. The John R. Opial Mercy College Scholarship Fund is available for a high school student who attends Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. All High School seniors who apply to Mercy College of Northwest Ohio will be considered for the scholarship. Priority will be given to the entering senior with the highest academic standing. It will be awarded once a year.
    Mercy College Alumni Association Nursing Student Scholarship
    Each year the Mercy Alumni Association awards a $500 scholarship to three students currently enrolled at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. The scholarship will be awarded based on a review of student applications that meet the following criteria.

    The student must: - Have successfully completed all first level courses and be eligible to begin the second level of the program of study - Currently maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA - Demonstrate evidence of clinical competence on the basis of recommendations submitted by two previous clinical instructors

    Health Information Technology Scholarship
    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio offers two full tuition scholarships to Health Information Technology students. Both high school seniors and students transferring from another regionally accredited college may apply. High school seniors must be admitted to Mercy College's HIT program, have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) and an ACT composite score of at least 21 (or comparable SAT score). Transfer students must be admitted to Mercy College's HIT program and have earned a minimum of 15 credit hours of college coursework with at least a 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited college. For applicants who have attended more than one regionally accredited college, GPA's from all of these colleges must combine to equal at least 3.0.

    Recipients must remain continuously enrolled either full-time or part-time in good standing in accordance with the HIT program of study curriculum. Students must also maintain a 3.0 GPA and complete the program within two years for Fall Start and within two and one half years for Spring Start. This scholarship can only be used towards otherwise unpaid or uncovered tuition and fees. The approximate value of scholarship is up to $18,000.00, based upon 2006-07 tuition rates.

    Frank and Clara: Lenhart Memorial Scholarship
    A scholarship was established in the memory of Frank and Clara Lenhart in recognition of their commitment to education and their ability to pass on their values to their children: seven Mercy nurses, two physicians, a laboratory technician, an X-ray technician and a farmer. The scholarship was established for students at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio to recognize nursing excellence and to help students in financial need.

    The endowed scholarship has been made possible by the generosity of the Lenhart daughters and their families. The Lenhart Nurses are: Mrs. Betty Lenhart Schlembach '44 of Quincy, Illinois; Mrs. Rita (Rick) Lenhart Brown '47 of Defiance, Ohio; Mrs. June (Bill) Lenhart Small '50 of Defiance, Ohio; Mrs. Suzanne (William) Lenhart McIntyre '58 of Monroe, Michigan; Mrs. Nancy (Daniel) Lenhart Ducatt '60 of Defiance, Ohio; Joan (Tom) Lenhart '63 of Defiance, Ohio; and Mrs. Peggy (John) Lenhart Bennett '65 of Cincinnati, Ohio.

    Mercy College of Northwest Ohio nursing students with a minimum 3.0 grade point average may apply for the scholarship.

    The college's scholarship committee selects the recipient. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate commitment to the college's motto of compassion and caring and have the greatest financial need.

    First Time Student Scholarship
    Are you thinking of going to college for the first-time? If you are looking for a high-quality educational experience but are concerned about the cost of earning a degree, Mercy College has a new scholarship program that can help. The College will offer 30 qualified first-time students a scholarship upon admission. Eligible Associate of Science students can apply for a total of $2,500 at a rate of $500 per semester for five semesters, and Bachelor of Science students can apply for $4,000 at a rate of $500 per semester for eight semesters.

    Eligible applicants:
    1. Must be accepted for admission to Mercy College of Northwest Ohio and have earned a high school grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    2. Must be a first-time college student, newly enrolled at Mercy College.
    3. Must enroll for at least 12 credit hours.

    St. Charles Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

    The St. Charles Mercy Hospital Auxiliary funded scholarships are awarded each year to students at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio (Mercy College) to help students in financial need and perpetuate the Mercy values of excellence, justice, human dignity, mercy, and service. The Auxiliary serves St. Charles Mercy Hospital by providing volunteers, community support, and funding.

    Students entering Mercy College with at least a 3.0 grade point average and in good standing may apply for the St. Charles Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship. The College’s Scholarship Committee selects the recipient. Highest consideration is given to students who demonstrate a commitment to Mercy values, and the greatest financial need. The award is $1000.

    Funding for the award is an annual gift from the St. Charles Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. In the unlikely event the initial intent of the funds can no longer be fulfilled, the Board of Directors of the Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Foundation may direct the funds to another use, which in their understanding, best meets the intent of the donor.

    The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
    • Admitted or enrolled at Mercy College,
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA and in good standing,
    • Financial need,
    • Completed application for the scholarship,
    • Complete a short essay on the Mercy values and how you demonstrate them in your life.


    The Mercy Health Partners Diversity Scholarship

    A scholarship has been established by the Mercy Health Partners – Northern Region Diversity Council to assist students of diverse cultural backgrounds at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio (Mercy College.) The Mercy Health Partners diversity vision statement reads:

    The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It is to understand that each individual is unique, and to recognize individual differences. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

    A celebration of uniqueness. An acknowledgement of individual differences. An exploration of the unknown. A nurturing of the extraordinary, and a mosaic of the richness of our dreams.

    Entering multicultural students accepted to Mercy College with at least a 3.0 grade point average and in good standing may apply for the scholarship. The College’s Scholarship Committee selects the recipient. The award is estimated at $1000.

    Funding for the award is based on an annual contribution from Mercy Health Partners – Northern Region Diversity Council. The scholarship is to be used for tuition and fees. It is to be split equally over two semesters. In the unlikely event the initial intent of the fund can not be fulfilled, the Board of Directors of the Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Foundation may direct the funds to another use, which in their understanding, best meets the intent of the donor.

    The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
    • An entering multicultural student accepted to Mercy College
    • Minimum 3.0 GPA and in good standing,
    • Completed application for the scholarship.

    A multicultural student must be a member of one of the four federally recognized minority groups – Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American – or a student with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.

    Scholarship requirements and availability are subject to change. As new scholarships become available, high school guidance counselors will be notified, announcements will be posted; on the student lounge, on student services bulletin boards, and in the Mercy Pulse - the college newsletter.
