HIT Facts

Fact #1: Healthcare Careers Are On The Rise
Healthcare continues to be one of the most lucrative industries where growth is concerned. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the health care industry has added 631,000 jobs since the recession began. The BLS projects employment to grow faster than the average – almost 20 percent from 2008 to 2016 – and prospects look especially bright for those with work experience in health care and strong technical skills.

Fact #2: Health Information Technology is one of the fastest-growing
occupations in the United States.

High-tech meets healthcare in Mercy College’s Health Information Technology (HIT) program. As part of one of the fastest-growing occupations in the United States, HIT professionals are experts in patient health information and medical records. It’s ideal for those who enjoy analyzing and problem solving and the excitement and flexibility of health care – without direct patient contact.

The Health Information Technology program at Mercy College of Ohio is focused on convenience and flexibility, as evident in the innovative redesign of its curriculum. Students may start in January or August and may enter the professional program in their first semester; all courses are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accommodate the working professional and are completed by 5:30 p.m. to allow for other evening commitments. The program structure saves students valuable time while earning their degree.

Fact #3: According to a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Health Research Institute, the adoption of health care IT and its use to reduce costs are among the top 10 health care trends to expect in 2010.
Experts say this will “create greater value in the health system, which will have a domino effect from one sector to another and redefine roles, responsibilities and relationships.” The study goes on to say that technology and telecommunication companies will continue to capture a growing share of the health care industry, especially given the huge boost broadband funding and health care IT expansion received from the 2009 stimulus package.
