The following is a list of the current scholarships available to our Toledo Campus students. Since this list is subject to change, you are encouraged to work with the Financial Aid Office for assistance with the application process. The deadline to apply for scholarships is February 28.

Mercy College Available Scholarships: Toledo Campus

Ashel & Dorothy Bryan Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. Ashel Bryan to recognize academic excellence and help students in financial need.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current Mercy College student in good standing
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page demonstrating commitment to the Mercy College's motto of compassion and caring
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Becky A. Kelley-Robarge BSN Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in memory of Becky Kelley-Robarge, Dean of Academic Affairs at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio from 1992 to 2000. Becky was also a Nursing Instructor at the Mercy School of Nursing and was instrumental in the establishment of the CollegeThis scholarship was established in memory of Becky Kelley-Robarge, Dean of Academic Affairs at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio from 1992 to 2000. Eligibility Requirements:
  • New enrollee seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page explaining your choice of nursing as a career, specifically the BSN program, and why you would like to attend Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Beverly J. Kummer-Lower Endowed Scholarship Fund

Purpose:
This endowed scholarship was established as a memorial to Beverly J. Kummer-Lower by her family and friends. She served as Program Coordinator of the Radiologic Technology Program at Mercy College starting in 1998. As Coordinator, Beverly oversaw the successful transition of the St. Vincent School two-year program to an Associate of Science Degree program at Mercy College.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Student seeking an Associate Degree in Radiologic Technology
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page explaining your choice of radiologic technology as a career and why you would like to attend Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Bishop James R. Hoffman Parish Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in honor of Bishop James R. Hoffman, priest of the Diocese of Toledo and its bishop from 1981 until his death in 2003.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church who are nominated by the pastor of their home parish
  • Demonstrated Christian leadership
  • New full-time enrollee into a healthcare degree program
  • Expressed willingness to participate actively in the Mercy College Campus Ministry/Service Learning Program
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page telling why you chose your major and why you would like to attend Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Number & Value of Scholarship:
One per parish in the Diocese of Toledo awarded annually
$500 per semester (excluding summer) to be used for tuition and fees
Renewable if 3.0 GPA, full-time enrollment, and participation in campus ministry/service learning program are maintained

Debbie H. McCoy Scholarship

Purpose:
Debbie H. McCoy began her career at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio in 1993 and was named the Coordinator of the Associate Degree Nursing Program in 1999. Debbie graduated from Ohio State in 1978 and received her Masters Degree from the Medical College of Ohio (MCO). She was a staff nurse at MCO, the Lucas County Health Department, and Mercy Hospital, prior to becoming an assistant professor at Mercy College.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current ADN student who has successfully completed all first level nursing courses and is eligible to begin the second level of the nursing program
  • 3.0 GPA and good standing with the College
  • Demonstrated evidence of clinical competence as validated in two letters of recommendation from previous clinical instructors
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page explaining why you chose nursing as a career and why you chose to attend Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

First Time Student Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship program was established in 2008 to assist first-time college students concerned with the cost of earning a degree.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Must be a first-time college student, newly enrolled at Mercy College
  • Must enroll for at least 12 credit hours

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • Thirty (30) scholarships awarded annually
  • Associate of Science students may apply for a total of $2,500 at a rate of $500 per semester for five (5) semesters contingent on maintaining a GPA of 3.0 and continuing good standing as a student
  • Bachelor of Science students may apply for a total of $4,000 at a rate of $500 per semester for eight (8) semesters contingent on maintaining a GPA of 3.0 and continuing good standing as a student

Frank & Clara Lenhart Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:
This endowed scholarship was established in 1997 in memory of Frank and Clara Lenhart, parents of seven Mercy nurses, two physicians, a laboratory technician, an X-ray technician, and a farmer. The scholarship recognizes nursing excellence and helps students in financial need.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current Mercy College nursing student with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Commitment to the college's motto of compassion and caring
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Priority given to graduates of Michigan high schools and/or residents of Michigan

One non-renewable scholarship awarded annually
$500 to be used for tuition and fees

Golf Scramble Scholarship Fund

Purpose:
This scholarship is funded by the annual Scramble for Scholarships golf outing. The first scramble was held in October 2008. The goal is to use the proceeds from this event to provide scholarship assistance to new or current students with demonstrated financial need.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current student
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page explaining the candidate's choice of area of study and reasons for choosing Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Health Information Technology Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in 2006 in celebration of the inauguration of President John F. Hayward, current president of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • 3.0 GPA and 21 or higher on ACT for high school seniors
  • 3.0 GPA for transfer students
  • New student admitted to the HIT program
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Students must complete the program within two years for fall start and two and one half years for spring start

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • Two awarded annually
  • Full tuition and fees
  • Renewable if 3.0 GPA and continuous enrollment in the HIT program are maintained

Irma Rutkowski Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship fund was established in December 2008 by Dr. Daniel and Mary Jo Hanson to honor Irma Rutkowski. A graduate of the University of Toledo, Irma began her career at Mercy Hospital in 1949 as a registered medical technologist. She assumed directorship of the School of Medical Technology in 1980 and retired in 1990.

As President of the Mercy Hospital Guild, Irma was instrumental in its transition to the Mercy College Auxiliary. In addition to leading the Auxiliary for ten years, Irma is coordinator of the Mercy Health Care Center Gift Shop volunteers.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Student enrolled at Mercy College and in good academic standing
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page telling why you chose your major and chose to attend Mercy College
  • Highest consideration will be given to students with the greatest financial need who are working toward self sufficiency and independence through their education.
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

  • Two awarded annually
  • $1,000 each to be used for tuition and fees

John R. Opial Mercy College Scholarship Fund

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in 1994 in the memory of John R. Opial. It is available for a high school student who has been accepted into Mercy College of Northwest Ohio.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • High school senior who is admitted to Mercy College
  • Priority will be given to the entering senior with the highest academic standing

$500 to be used for tuition and fees

Mary Beth Hayward Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in 2004 as a memorial to Mary Beth Hayward. Mrs. Hayward was a faculty member of Mercy School of Nursing from 1966 to 1974 and continued as a nursing educator until her death in 1994.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current BSN Completion or Pre-licensure student
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page demonstrating commitment to the Mercy values in the applicant's life
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Mary Jo Urschalitz Scholarship

Purpose:
The scholarship was established through a bequest to St. Vincent School of Nursing made by Mary Jo Urschalitz. Ms. Urschalitz, a 1942 graduate of the school, worked as a nurse for the Health Department in Findlay, Ohio for many years. She had particular concern for the migrant workers who came to the Findlay area each summer and gave numerous volunteer hours of service to the migrant community.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New enrollee seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page explaining your choice of nursing as a career, specifically the BSN program, and why you would like to attend Mercy College
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Mercy Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established by the Mercy Alumni Association to assist a Mercy College student in the completion of his/her studies.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Successful completion of all first level courses and eligibility to begin the second level of the program of study
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrate evidence of clinical competence on the basis of recommendations submitted by two previous clinical instructors

Mercy College Auxiliary Endowed Scholarship Fund

Purpose:
The Mercy College Auxiliary established this endowed fund to recognize academic excellence, help students in financial need, and perpetuate the Mercy values of compassion, excellence, human dignity, justice, sacredness of life, and service.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current Mercy College student
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Number & Value of Scholarship:
Two non-renewable scholarships awarded annually
$500 per scholarship to be used for tuition and fees

Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Dean's Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established to assist high school seniors who have been admitted to Mercy College.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • High school senior who is admitted to Mercy College
  • 3.3 high school GPA and 21 or higher ACT or comparable SAT score

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • One awarded annually
  • $1,750 per semester
  • Renewable for two or four years, depending on program of study
  • 3.0 GPA and good standing at Mercy College

Mercy College of Northwest Ohio Presidential Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established to assist high school seniors who have been admitted to Mercy College

Eligibility Requirements:
  • High school senior who is admitted to Mercy College
  • 3.5 high school GPA on a 4.0 scale and 25 or higher ACT or comparable SAT score

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • One scholarship for full tuition and fees
  • Two scholarships for half tuition and fees
  • All scholarships are renewable annually for two or four years dependent on the program of study
  • 3.3 GPA and good standing at Mercy College

Mercy Health Partners Diversity Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in 2008 by the Mercy Health Partners Ð Northern Region Diversity Council to assist students of diverse cultural backgrounds at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Entering multicultural students who are admitted to Mercy College; multicultural student must be a member of one of the four federally recognized minority groups Ð Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino or Native American Ð or a student with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism
  • 3.0 GPA

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • One non-renewable scholarship awarded annually
  • $1,000 to be used for tuition and fees split equally over two semesters

Regueyra Family Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was originally established in 1996 in memory of Alberto Regueyra, the brother of Dr. F.I. Regueyra, to recognize nursing excellence and to help students in financial need. In 2006 the fund name was changed to remember all deceased members of the Regueyra family.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current nursing student
  • Letter of recommendation from a clinical instructor addressing the student's nursing abilities and commitment to caring for patients with compassion
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page demonstrating commitment to the College's motto of compassion and caring

  • $500 to be used for tuition and fees

Ruth L. Kelly Nursing Scholarship

Purpose:
Ruth Lundt Kelly was the founding dean of the Medical College of Ohio School of Nursing (MCO) in 1970. The school offered the first bachelor's degree nursing program in northwest Ohio. The Ruth L. Kelly Foundation was established to carry on charitable or educational activities with an emphasis on scholarship support for students enrolled in degree-granting nursing programs in northwest Ohio.

Eligibility Requirements for ADN Students:
  • Successfully completed all first level nursing courses and be eligible to begin the second level of the nursing program
  • 3.0 GPA and good standing in the nursing program
  • Two letters of recommendation from clinical instructors citing evidence of clinical competence
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page which describes the candidate's reason for choosing nursing as a career

Eligibility Requirements for BSN Students:
  • Pre-licensure students who have successfully completed all 300 level nursing courses
  • 3.0 GPA and good standing in the nursing program
  • Two letters of recommendation from clinical instructors citing evidence of clinical competence or a letter of recommendation from a current employer for BSN completion students
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page which describes the candidate's reason for choosing BSN education and nursing as a career

  • Determined annually

Ruth Obert Kolwitz Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established in 2008 by Mrs. Kolwitz, her family and friends. Ruth Kolwitz graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1948 and worked for many years at Mercy Hospital.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Pre-licensure BSN students who have successfully completed all 200 level nursing courses
  • 3.0 GPA and good standing with the College
  • Two letters of recommendation from clinical instructors or faculty members citing evidence of clinical competence
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page which describes the candidate's reason for choosing BSN education and nursing as a career

  • One non-renewable scholarship awarded annually
  • $1,000 to be used for tuition and fees

St. Charles Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

Purpose:
Auxiliary scholarships are awarded annually to help students entering the College who are in financial need and to perpetuate the Mercy values of compassion, excellence, human dignity, justice, sacredness of life and service.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current student in good standing
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

  • $1,000 to be used for tuition and fees

Sister Patricia Ann Dalke, RSM Endowed Scholarship Fund

Purpose:
This scholarship honors the memory of Sister Patricia Ann who was the first and founding President of Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. Her leadership and vision led to the establishment of the College in December 1992.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current student enrolled in bachelor degree program
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page demonstrating commitment to the Mercy Core Values

  • $500 to be used for tuition and fees

Sister Phyllis Ann Gerold, RSM Endowed Scholarship for Nursing

Purpose:
In 1993 the Board of Trustees of Mercy and St. Charles Hospitals established this fund in recognition and honor of the dedicated leadership and outstanding accomplishments of Sister Phyllis Ann. This endowed scholarship continues her legacy of excellence.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • For ADN - successful completion of all first level courses
  • For BSN - successful completion of all 100 level courses
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Two letters of recommendation from clinical instructors citing evidence of clinical competence
  • Submit an essay of not more than one double-spaced, type written page which describes the candidate's reasons for nursing as a career

  • $500 to be used for tuition and fees

Susanne M. Prusakiewicz Smith & Michael C. Smith Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:
A gift from the estate of Willis Smith established this endowed fund in memory of his wife, Susan M. Prusakiewicz Smith, and his son, Michael C. Smith. The purpose of the fund is to further medical laboratory excellence.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current student with demonstrated academic excellence
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • Preference is given to students majoring in Allied Health

  • Three non-renewable scholarships awarded annually
  • $500 to be used for tuition and fees

St. Vincent Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

Purpose:
In 1935, seven women, all graduates of the St. Vincent School of Nursing founded "The Guild" for the hospital. The name has been changed to the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary, but the purpose of this volunteer organization remains the same: to promote the mission and philosophy of the Grey Nuns and the Sisters of Mercy.

The scholarships provided by the Auxiliary are awarded to help students entering Mercy College who are in financial need and to perpetuate the Mercy core values of compassion, excellence, human dignity, justice, sacredness of life, and service. Particularly emphasis is placed on "service" in support of the mission of the Auxiliary.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New or current student in good standing
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated service within one's faith community or civic community as documented in an essay citing examples of service rendered within the past two (2) years
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28

Number & Value of Scholarship:
  • Two non-renewable scholarships awarded
  • $1,000 awarded for tuition and fees ($500 per semester)

Valerie Czerniak Ayres Scholarship

Purpose:
This scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Valerie Czerniak Ayers. Mrs. Ayres was a 1963 graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing and worked in the ER at Mercy Hospital for ten years following graduation. After her children entered college, Valerie returned to nursing and served as a case manager for home health care services until December 2005. Val is remembered most for her humility, her valor, her love of friends and family, her strong work ethic, her treasured friendship and generosity, as well as her undying compassion and empathy for others.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • New student in the ADN or BSN degree program in good standing
  • Completed FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office by February 28
  • 3.0 GPA
