Service Learning

What Is It?

Service Learning is an integration of organized service into the higher education curriculum in order to both benefit the community and enhance the student’s learning experience. Through Service Learning, students are involved in experiential learning with instructor-facilitated reflection. These experiences are typically in a community agency or non-profit organization – always an institution that can benefit from the student’s volunteer effort.

What’s the Source?

The basis for Service Learning at Mercy College includes the Mercy College Core Values, the Corporal Works of Mercy (Matthew 25:34-36), and the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching (http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/projects/socialteaching/excerpt.shtml).  When we engage in service, we deepen these values in our lives!

How Do I Get Involved?

Mercy College offers many opportunities to engage in community and on-campus service projects.  From helping make a blanket for Project Linus on campus to participating in the Alternative Spring Break Trip in regions outside Ohio, Mercy College students can reach out to those in need.  Opportunities can be found on this website, in the Student Lounge, and on flyers posted around campus.

Mercy College Ambassadors

The Mercy College Ambassadors are a group of nine students committed to service to the Toledo and Mercy College communities.  They are full of enthusiasm and leadership potential that is developed in the year long commitment.  Each Ambassador is required to perform 250 hours of service which includes leadership training and meetings.

Service Learning/Community Service  Documentation Log

Students can now document service learning and community service hours through the department of campus ministry and service learning.  This web-based form can be used by students logging hours for a class or for personal growth.  It is our goal to use this program to document service by students and develop a recognition program for student participation.  CLICK HERE to log your service today!
