Dear Students

My name is Wendy Nathan and I am the counselor at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. No doubt you are on this page to find out more information about Mercy College’s counseling services. If you read the headings below, you will be able to learn about how counseling works and how to schedule an appointment with me. You will also find great internet links to information about mental health issues. I strongly encourage you to click on the ULifeline link when you have the chance. There, you can find a list of on and off campus resources as well as many articles and quick online surveys.

Students stop by to see me for a variety of reasons, including good ones! It is important to recognize when you need extra help, and that you don’t have to face problems all alone. Those who seek help are strong individuals.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. I look forward to meeting with you in
the near future.

~ Wendy

Campus Counseling
The counselor provides free supportive counseling and referral services to all enrolled students at Mercy College. The number of counseling sessions is determined by the counselor and the student, and based on need. Counseling sessions are confidential unless it is for the protection of the student or others.
What Are Some Common Reasons A Student Might Seek Counseling?
A student might come to see a counselor if he or she is experiencing issues in his or her personal life, such as relationship problems. Or, for other issues like test anxiety, performance anxiety, communication difficulties, self esteem, general anxiety, depression, conflict resolution, homesickness, poor grades, grief, and stress management. If you have any question as to whether the counselor can help you with your issue, please contact her.
Referral Services
While many issues can be resolved with the help of the Mercy College counselor, it is sometimes necessary to refer the student to an outside provider in order to get the proper care. The counselor will make every effort to help you find the right provider.
How Does Counseling Work?
Counseling works by helping you objectively look at your behaviors, feelings, and thoughts in situations you find problematic. It helps you learn more effective ways in dealing with those situations. Counseling is a collaborative effort. You and the counselor will work together to help you achieve your goals and reach a greater peace of mind.
How to make an appointment
You can contact the counselor in three ways: By calling to schedule an appointment, by dropping by her office or by emailing her. Counseling hours are generally from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The contact information for the counselor is at the top of this page. The counselor looks forward to helping you.
Therapy Dog Services
The counselor brings a certified therapy dog to her office daily. The dog's name is Tuesday, she is black Labrador Retriever, and she is on campus to provide stress management to the Mercy College community. It is now known that playing with or petting animals reduces stress, boosts your immune system, lowers your blood pressure, and creates a sense of clam. Tuesday is also present during counseling sessions to provide comfort when discussing difficult issues. Please visit the therapy dog, she loves visitors!
Emergencies
If you feel your problem is urgent and you cannot wait to schedule and appointment, please contact the counselor immediately. If the counselor is not available please contact James Harter, Dean of Students, at 419. 251.1786, room 2622. If your emergency is life threatening you may contact 911, or if in Lucas County, Rescue Mental Health, at 419-255-9585. Other options include going to the nearest emergency room or mental health center. Also, you may call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
