Short-term healthcare certificates at Mercy College garner good wages
Applications are now being accepted for new short-term certificate programs in Ophthalmic (eye care) Technology and Polysomnographic (sleep) Technology* that will only take eight to twelve months to complete. Classes are conveniently scheduled just two days per week to accommodate students’ busy schedules.
Mercy College developed the programs in response to staffing needs expressed by Toledo area physicians and healthcare professionals. The certificate programs also meet the needs of individuals seeking employment in the growing field of healthcare who want to earn a good living but can’t afford to be out of the workforce for very long.
Ophthalmic Technology prepares students to assist ophthalmologists and optometrists in performing diagnostic and technical tasks in as little as eight months. The program prepares students to take the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) exam and earn COA credentials. COA’s begin their careers earning $12-14 per hour with the opportunity to earn more after one year of professional experience and additional credentials.
Polysomnographic Technology prepares students to work in sleep disorder centers, preparing patients for sleep studies, monitoring patients during studies and recording results. The program can be completed in twelve months and prepares students to take the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) exam and earn RPSGT credentials. RPSGT’s begin their careers earning $18-24 per hour.
According to recent labor statistics, 10% of Ohioans remain unemployed. The rate is even higher in Michigan, with the nation’s highest unemployment rate, at 15.3 percent. Americans are looking into new career paths and education to find a way to make ends meet. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment in healthcare to continue to grow through 2016. The need for employees goes beyond traditional health care professions such as nursing, with an increasing need for allied health care professionals.
