As of August 15, 2011, Mercy College of Northwest Ohio becomes Mercy College of Ohio.
In announcing the name change, College President John Hayward noted the existing Youngstown campus and recent significant growth in distance education programs. “While we have campuses in both Toledo and Youngstown, students are increasingly choosing on-line classes making Mercy College a viable option for students outside of northwest Ohio. We strive to meet the constantly changing needs of the healthcare industry by providing the degrees and continuing and professional education required by the ongoing transformation of healthcare delivery.”
The name change maintains the College’s rich history. Established in 1992, the College is successor to the Mercy School of Nursing, founded in Toledo in 1918. Mercy College is sponsored by Catholic Health Partners and Mercy, its regional member organization. Catholic Health Partners is one the nation’s largest and most respected health care systems and the fourth largest employer in the State of Ohio.
“Everything else remains the same at Mercy College,” Hayward explained. “We are committed to providing the highest quality education with affordable tuition while remaining steadfast in the Mercy values of compassion, excellence, human dignity, sacredness of life, justice and service. We are faithful to our Catholic tradition and the heritage of our founders, the Sisters of Mercy and the Grey Nuns. We seek to inspire our students to be of service and to mentor others through the twenty-first century and beyond,” Mr. Hayward added.
The College currently offers Bachelor of Science degree programs in Human Biology, Medical Imaging, Nursing and Health Care Administration, and Associate of Science degree programs in Cardiovascular Technology, General Studies, Health Information Technology, Nursing and Radiologic Technology. The College also offers credit certificates in EMT-Paramedic, Ophthalmic Technology and Polysomnographic Technology.
