From the Director of Counseling-Alcohol Consumption Website

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Check out: www.Checkyourdrinking.net

This website collects self-reported data on drinking habits and provides users with a report comparing their drinking to national averages, information on drinking risks, an estimation of their annual spending on alcohol, a calculation of how much time the user spends intoxicated each year, and safe-drinking guidelines. When presented these facts in a non-judgmental manner, participants are able to re-evaluate their drinking and may be motivated to reduce their alcohol consumption. It it free and takes about 3 minutes to complete.

New Printers/New Costs

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Mercy College now has new printers/copiers throughout the building . However, in order to keep up with our costs in providing this service, we have had to raise the price of copies. Black and white copies are now 10 cents per page, and color copies are 30 cents per page. There is a new color printer/copier in the Library for student use. This intelligent printer will automatically deduct the proper amount – 10 or 30 cents –  from your copy card.

Copy cards can be purchased at the Library Circulation Desk for $1.00 and come loaded with 53 cents. Emergency copy cards will no longer be available in the Library. Students must puchase a copy card in order to copy. The Student Lounge copier still accepts coins.

American Opportunity Tax Credit

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009, textbook and other course material expenses incurred in 2009 and 2010 that are not covered by scholarship or grant aid may be counted towards the newly created tax credit called the American Opportunity Tax Credit on that year’s tax return.

According to the IRS, the new credit temporarily replaces and expands the previous Hope Credit for tax years 2009 and 2010, making the American Opportunity Tax Credit available to a broader range of taxpayers, including many with higher incomes and those who owe no tax.

It also:

  • Adds required course materials to the list of qualifying expenses
  • Allows the credit to be claimed for the first four post-secondary education years instead of two

Many of those eligible will qualify for the maximum annual credit of $2,500 per student, which is more than $700 higher than the old Hope Credit, and, for the first time, will provide a partial refund of up to $1,000.
